BMMJ Final - The Winners Pt.2

BMMJ Final - The Winners

BMMJ Playoffs Final - Kisah & gelagat

Headlines
1. Yunos is BMMJ champion
2. Pisang goreng liking
3. Hj Dua wins but still remains... Dua
4. Hj Samuil "senior" moment
5. Hj Dua sanyam masa lunch
6. Anak inchan conspiracy theory

1. Congrats to Yunos on being crowned the BMMJ champion for 2010. Despite almost pulling out due to diarrhea, his third placed position was enough to win the overall title from Hj Dua & Bahreen.

2. First it was biscuit tiger but now Hj Amir has a new enemy - Pisang goreng Liking (basically flat dried sweetened banana) which became the weapon of choice for Hj Samuil which he gave to Hj Amir with deadly effect. Emmm.. abis..

3. As per ramalan Hj Samuil, our grandad's win last Saturday was not enough to win the overall title but he remains a tough nut to crack.

4. Planning for our KK trip next week, I mention to Hj Rahim that I would like to play at Dalit as I havent played there in over 10 years rather than Karambunai. At which Hj Samuil said "Advantage tu kan main di Dalit" where he only sat four feet away from me. Anybody got a spare hearing aid?

5. We at BMMJ normally have lunch pool to be collected from each player before the game and use the money to pay for lunch. Whatever is left goes to the winner of the day. Hj Dua was the winner this time and the food ordered during lunch comprise of crab, sea bass, some vege etc.. not going to be cheap.. So it was a wee bit strange Hj Dua who is normally very talkative remain silent maybe takut paksa keluar usin kan menambah..indeed.. the bill was $80 more than the pool money. However, thanks to Hj Amir for settling the balance of the bill

6. Anak inchan Senior and Hj Shahbudin conspired to fix me and "contain" the threat coming from Yunos (Basically pyscho him so to break his game) I knew little of this until Yunos himself admitted to me on the back nine this grand masterplan. But usul - usulnya, it backfired.. hehe...

BSP vs RBAF friendly golf - 21st Nov 2010

Seven BMMJ members participated in the BSP and Min of Defence/Royal Brunei Armed Forces friendly golf tournament held at the Army course in Berakas. They were Khun Ali, Jang Budin, GY, G Sam, G Rahim, Anak Inchan Senior and myself.

The RBAF dominated the game beating BSP by a massive 33 stroke margin - makan siang.
However, the top 10 of the BSP was dominated by no less than four BMMJ players in respective order
1. Hj Mohd Zairin (2 under ohh.. chop!!!)
2. Yours truly
3. Hj Abd Rahim
4. Hj Samuil

while Pg Ali was 15th and Hj Shahbudin was placed 16th. Meanwhile Anak Inchan was placed 3rd in the nett category bringing home a vacuum cleaner. Innocently, when he arrived home his daughter ask him "Manang vacuum lucky draw?" ahhh kids... sian kana underestimate anak sendiri.. hehe..

Handicap

Throughout the year, one topic of discussion that never leaves the lunch table on any given weekday and especially after a Saturday game lunch is one's handicap

Many reasons are cited for an increase (never decrease) - Slump tia, jadi ATM lah, sakit tangan lapas mengangkat barang and others that are as strange as ambuyat in a Gordon Ramsay restaurant.

A few of us have had our handicap chop and rightly so. Hj Shahbudin is down to 15 at one stage after winning a couple of tournaments. Myself went down to 8 and Mohamad also down to 16 after winning a major.

While others cannot stop kuyanyang siang malam & pagi petang kan minta naik handicap but our Handicap Secretary Hj Samuil didnt even bat an eyelid.

So what I can propose to improve the calculation for the 2011 season is as follows which is based on current USGA practice:

1. Keep scores from your last five rounds (18 holes).

2. From your scorecards, note the rating and slope for the course that you played for each of those scores (based on which tee box played)

3. Subtract the course rating from the score you earned on that course.

4. Multiply that number by 113.

5. Divide that number by the slope of the course. This number is the differential.

6. Take the lowest of your five differentials and multiply it by 0.96, and you have your handicap.

With this methodology, it is hope that at least the group can have a defined process and procedure to increase or decrease handicaps in the future. Apa fikiran?

BMMJ Playoffs Final - The Contenders

8th Position - Haji Samuil Mohidin
Points: 2100
Good: Known to be Mr. Consistent and reliable. Not easily kana pyscho.
Bad: Questions over stamina. Need to take red bull and Kuku Bima before play.
Overall: Need a minor miracle to lift the Overall title on Saturday (leaders to play badly and a win by him)

Advice from GY - break 100

Especially to those who made it to the final this Saturday.. Not forgetting orang pencen should read this carefully.. Ketahuan ia

Quote:
If Tiger Wood, Phil Mickleson, or any other pro makes an 8 (a snowman) on any hole, that is terrible. Your average score on a par 5 is 7 or more right now. For a golf beginner an 8 is really no big deal. 10 is the score you should avoid.

The difference is a pro is trying to break 70 and you are trying to break 100. Don’t let par, Tiger Wood, or your buddy set your goals.

Do you plan your rounds thinking about what score on each hole is reasonable and achievable for you?

To score 99 on a par 72 course you must average 5½ shots on every hole. Somebody is asking themselves: “How do I score ½ of a stroke on any hole?” Obviously you don’t! On the first par 4 you score a 5 and on the next par 4 you score a 6. The average is 5½.

On the first par 5 you score a 6 and on the next part 5 you score a 7. On the first par 3 you score a 4 and on the next par 3 you score a 5. The average of all that is 5½. (6+7+4+5=22 and 22/4=5½)

To break 100 you must average bogey and ½ stokes per hole. To break 90 you must average bogey. If you don’t believe me, do the math. Now you understand the math, but what is the plan?

First, improve your skills. Don’t bother setting goals in a skill based activity unless you intend to improve. A goal doesn’t make putts or hit straight drives.

Second, set your next goal within sight of your present skill level. If your average score is 120 then aim at double bogey per hole (108). As you practice and improve one or two parts of your game you will find those 12 strokes. You can’t get to 90 or 100 strokes until you get past 110.

Third, ask yourself what is par really worth? Par is an estimate of what a scratch golfer should score on a hole or total for the entire course. Tiger’s par is really 68 or less and mine is around 90. If your par is around double bogey then add two strokes to the listed par for a hole. Now you have a reasonable target for your own performance.

Finally, what happens when you do score a snowman? There is no punishment beyond personal disappointment. Tiger makes bogey sometimes, he just needs to shoot one more birdie to make his goal. You need to score more bogeys and fewer double bogeys on the remaining holes.

At this point in time you probably struggle more on par 5′s than anywhere else. That is normal! To reach a par 5 requires 3 accurate shots in a row. Can you really do that right now? To reach a par 3 requires 1 accurate shot. You will probably loose strokes on par 5′s and make them up on short par 4′s and par 3′s. That is part of your plan. Remember pros love par 5′s but they kill us. Learn to play golf with joy.

You may never hit a drive 300 yards, but you can measure your own progress. Set reasonable goals and then practice to improve your skills. Measure your game against your own growing skills not what you see professionals do on Sunday. Remember you aren’t just an amateur, you are a beginner. Relax and enjoy every round.

I had the honour and privilege to work with Yang Berhormat Pehin during my time as Administrative Officer at the Belait District office in 2002. Actually, my first task was to brief him PDB's plan of action and status report during the great flood of 3rd January 2002 in KB - it was only my second day on the job!

The whole of Lorong Tiga Seria was flooded and the picture shows Yang Berhormat Pehin (hidden with white shirt) who at that time the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs having just arrived from BSB being met by me and other officers of the PDB. The then District Officer Dato Hj Harun was on leave while ADO Hj Abdoh was somewhere else.

A keen golfer himself, I played golf together with Yang Berhormat Pehin & Datin on a few occasions at the Par 3 Garden Course Jerudong circa 1987 to 1992. Sometimes Abdullah Soefri also joined us. He never fails to teach me a few tips around the green and advice on life in general.

More importanly, Yang Berhormat Pehin strongly supported a charity golf tournament that I chaired and organised by Panaga Golf Club in raising money for the Afghanistan relief fund also in 2002. We raised $10,000 - a huge success. Fittingly, he even joined the golf tournament where I played in the same flight with him & Brian Straub (Former BSP TD)

Yang Berhormat Pehin's kindness, understanding & vision made him a popular and respected figure during his long period in the government. Myself, like many people in Brunei will deeply miss him.

Semoga roh Yang Berhormat Pehin akan ditempatkan bersama orang-orang yang beriman dan beramal Salleh - Al Fatihah.
