Ghosts on Brunei golf courses

Not long after I joined BLNG in 2004, my GM at that time told me a story about a golfer who both of us knew, collapse while playing golf at a Jerudong based course.

Apparently it was closed to Maghrib time and this particular golfer may have witnessed one and subsequently fainted.

"So Bahreen, dont play on that particular nine after 5pm"

According to Hj Rozan Yunos who was my Director during my days working at the PMO in his blog...

"There are many places and tales like these in Brunei. The Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club and the Empire Hotel Golf Club are two such places where balls have been known to be on the fairway disappeared when you get to where you saw them. Tales about golf clubs being 'borrowed' and returned to your bag or returned to a prominent place some holes away has also made the rounds."

So if you heard/seen anything funny out there, let me know..

Al-Fatihah

Amin.

I knew Allahyarham well before he married my first cousin Zurainah. He strikes me as a humble and with a well balanced outlook to life. Very dedicated to his family and job at BIBD.

Its even tougher for people like me to accept his passing as we are about the same age and so too were our kids. But.. Allah lagi menyayanginya...

Takziah dan tulus ikhlas from all of us at BMMJ

Comments from Malaysian Golfer on Semarang Golf

Quote

Day One was spent in Merapi. The course layout is just like our Awana Genting (Awana lagi susah). Like many mountain courses, water hazard was minimal. But the view was awesome and the weather cool ( I played at 1.00 pm). It was at the foot of Merapi volcano. But pass 10.00 am, Merapi was sleeping shrouded by white cloud. So, to really enjoy the view, comne and play at 7.00 am. The clubhouse, hospitality was nothing to shout about. The pro shop is also a dissapointment.

Day Two was spent at BIGCC (Borobudur) It is an open course, lined with palm trees, sprinkled with bunkers, water hazards, dog legs left and right. Challenging, exciting and beautiful. The hospitality from the one who received you as you step out of your van, the receiptionist, the golfers' terrace even the girl who sell you the second hand balls are charming. It remind you of any Jakarta courses as BIGCC is managed by those at Jababeka GC. It was formerly an army course and it continues that tradition with all top brass playing hence the high standard of the course as well as all the staff.

Day Three was at Gombel golf. Carved out from a hill, open and hot. Its comparable to the former Enville Golf Club near Bukit Unggul. As you go out first 9, you have to consistently hit left as the course is sloping to the right and as you go in second 9, you got to hit right as the course slope to the left. That is only the fairway. Each green has its own problem and green management is critical. Else your ball will be going back and forth Seremban - KL by passing the hole. Since it was Friday, all action stopped for Jumaat prayer and part of the buggy area was converted as praying area for the golfers and staff.

To those who got aspiration from their caddies, all 3 have caddies yang genit2. BIGCC is top on the list matching that of Jakarta courses, next is Gombel and then Merapi. Gombel also serve caddies without bra. You have to be informed with stories on Manaohara to have a chatty conversation with the caddies. Took photo of my caddies but due to non computer savvy, do not know how to download.

OK, it just to share my experience and hope give kakigolfers some insight into golfing in Central Java. All the 3 are good courses but for everything my vote goes to BIGCC.

Golf Surabaya style: sustainable golf + good food

If you have played in places like Bali and certain courses in Jakarta like Royale, you probably see padi fields around the course. At Finna, it is actually part of the course.

Another factor why we at BMMJ like to play in Indonesia is the stunning food and unreal prices.. As you can see Manan, G2 and myself were very hungry after the golf. During the Surabaya tour, on averaged we ordered two types of fish (fried gurame + grill gurame) two types of greens, oxtail soup (of course), some fried chix, young coconut, lots of sambal.. and we only paid about B$37 to B$39.. and best thing was we didn't get any stomach ache...

Looks like there was a lot of food, but we actually finished all of it.. People at the next table must have wondered how we could finish them all...

Surabaya Tour

Played at Finna, Bukut Darmo and Ciputra... Worth visiting again if you ask me

Review
Finna:
Plus:Fantastic course with good views all round. Shame there was fog otherwise we could see the mountains in the distance.
Minus: Getting there means have to pass the mudflow (2km took 30mins)

Bukit Darmo
Plus: Close to city
Minus: greens were poor, actually overall course needs big improvement

Ciputra
Plus: close to city, course is long and narrow, island Par 3
Minus: Green fee is poor value compared to others

Layar Seafood restaurant is the best placed for crabs etc in Surabaya.. Highly recommended
